Journey to Reunion - 751st Anniversary of Rumi

751 years have passed since the great 13th-century philosopher, poet, and Sufi mystic Mevlana Jalaluddin Rumi embarked on his journey to the eternal realm on December 17, 1273. He described death as "Sheb-i Arus," meaning "Wedding Night," viewing it as the day of reunion with the Beloved, Allah.

Life and Philosophy of Rumi:
Born in Balkh in 1207, Rumi was raised under the guidance of his father, Bahaeddin Veled, one of the most prominent scholars of his time. Due to the Mongol invasion, he migrated westward with his family and settled in Konya after a long journey. There, he taught in madrasas and educated thousands of students.

Encounter with Shams of Tabriz:
His encounter with Shams of Tabriz in 1244 marked a turning point in Rumi's life. This meeting transformed him from a traditional madrasa scholar to a poet of divine love and ecstasy. The ghazals in his Divan-i Kebir and the wisdom in his Masnavi, written after Shams, continue to guide humanity through centuries.

The Mevlevi Order:
Systematized by Rumi's son Sultan Veled after his father's death, the Mevlevi Order is a Sufi path based on love, tolerance, and service to humanity. The Sema ceremony symbolizes a spiritual journey accompanied by music. The whirling dervishes' right hand pointing to the sky and left hand to the earth represents receiving from the divine and giving to the people.

Sheb-i Arus Ceremonies:
The annual Sheb-i Arus ceremonies held in Konya between December 7-17 attract visitors from around the world. During this period, various events take place:

  • Sema performances
  • Sacred music concerts
  • Academic symposiums
  • Exhibitions and shows
  • Commemoration events

Universal Messages:
Rumi's teachings remain relevant today:
"Come, come again, whoever you are"
"Either appear as you are or be as you appear"
"Be like a river in generosity and helping others"
"Be like the sun in compassion and mercy"
"Be like the night in covering others' faults"
"Be like the earth in humility"

In this 751st year of reunion, Rumi's messages continue to offer solutions to modern world problems. His philosophy of love and tolerance builds bridges between different cultures and beliefs. He calls humanity to peace, brotherhood, and spiritual depth.

His life journey, summarized in the words "I was raw, I became cooked, I was burned," continues to guide humanity. Rumi's teachings illuminate the path for modern individuals experiencing isolation, alienation, and spiritual emptiness in today's world.

The Sheb-i Arus, commemorated for the 751st time this year, serves not only as a memorial ceremony but also as an important occasion to remember and preserve Rumi's universal messages. Humanity continues to walk the path he opened, guided by love and tolerance.
